Is Honor's Passport Foldable Coming Sooner Than We Thought?
Today we have some new chatter about an upcoming Chinese foldable, one that should have that wide passport style aspect ratio that is becoming all the rage. But like a lot of these sort of Chinese leaks, things are a little bit confusing. So, I'm going to try my best to untangle this.
This is the post in question from digital chat station over on the Chinese social media website, Weibo. What they're talking about here is a wide foldable using a 2nm chip and they're pushing that release up forward, potentially to compete against the upcoming foldable iPhone. It was previously mentioned that the internal screen was 7.6 in and the external screen is 5.5 in.
Then we get to this line discussing the "horizontal runway design." I've done some digging, and apparently, this is referring to the camera module, and he's describing the shape. "Deco" is short for decoration, which is how people in these Chinese tech circles reference the camera housing. As for the "horizontal runway design," think like a racetrack. A horizontal racetrack. Best I can tell, they are referring to a camera design that's going to be like a horizontal pill shape. That would be my guess.
The Latest post also mentions it has "plugged in 200 million large bottom images." What they are talking about is the primary camera being 200MP. There's a periscope telephoto, and the battery is going to be 7,000mAh or higher, aiming for the flagship wide folding with the largest battery in its class.
Why This Is a Big Deal for Honor
Taking these massive specifications at face value, the prospect of Honor delivering a passport book style foldable is incredibly exciting. I have really enjoyed the Honor Magic V5 and most recently the V6. To be completely transparent, part of the reason this gets me hyped is that I have a working relationship with Honor. They sent me both of those devices, so I am hoping they do not ignore me on this passport style device because it is the exact form factor I want more than anything else they have made so far. Their hardware is consistently great, the battery life is fantastic, and the animations are incredibly smooth.
The only thing holding me back from being completely over the moon is their software design push toward liquid glass style theming. If you look at the community discussions around recent Magic OS updates, they are adding more and more of it, and I just do not think it looks good or reads well.
Even with that software preference, an Honor wide format foldable fast-tracked to the market would be massive. Swapping out their usual 50MP primary sensor for a 200MP camera alongside that massive 7,000mAh battery would create an absolute beast of a phone. The zoom capabilities on the V6 are already excellent, so giving it an upgraded primary camera in a passport form factor would make it one hell of a device.
