Is the OnePlus Open 2 Finally Coming?

When the OnePlus Open first launched, it was a revelation. It felt leaps and bounds ahead of the competition at the time, including the Samsung Z Fold and the Pixel Fold. The camera hardware was superior, the battery life was excellent, the charging speed was fast and the Open Canvas multitasking system was a game-changer. It was a device that felt genuinely incredible to use.

Because the first phone was so universally beloved, excitement for a sequel was high. Yet here we are years later without a OnePlus Open 2. I posted my unboxing of the original on October 27, 2023. As we approach 2026, that original phone is still fantastic and holds up well against newer foldables. But the question remains: where is the follow-up?

The Oppo Connection

To understand the situation, you have to look at the relationship between OnePlus and Oppo. The OnePlus Open and the Oppo Find N3 were essentially the same device. These sister companies often operate by Oppo releasing phones in certain regions, which OnePlus then rebadges for other markets with OxygenOS.

When leaks began circulating for the next generation, they were all about the Oppo Find N5. There was radio silence regarding a OnePlus Open 2. I noted back in February that while we saw renders and rumors for the N5, nothing was surfacing for a OnePlus equivalent. When influencers started getting their hands on the N5, it became clear that the Open 2 was not coming.

Why OnePlus Skipped a Generation

OnePlus actually addressed this directly. In a blog post, they celebrated the success of the original Open but stated they had decided not to release a foldable for that year. They explained that Oppo would take the lead in the foldable segment for the time being.

However, they explicitly noted that this pause did not signify a departure from the category. They mentioned a commitment to incorporating "cutting-edge new materials" and "sophisticated engineering" into future products. This suggests they are still in the game but were waiting for a substantial reason to release a new device.

It is possible they felt the Oppo Find N5 was not a big enough leap over the original Open. While the N5 had a larger battery, it actually had a smaller main camera sensor than the Open. If OnePlus felt the trade-offs were not worth a rebadge, skipping that generation makes sense.

OnePlus Open

Enter the Oppo Find N6

We are now seeing rumors percolate about the Oppo Find N6 from sources like Digital Chat Station. Unlike the N5, this device looks like it could offer the meaningful upgrades necessary to justify a OnePlus Open 2.

Here are some of the rumored specs that make this exciting:

  • Larger Screen: An 8.1-inch inner screen compared to the 7.82-inch screen on the original Open.

  • Processor Leap: Jumping from the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 all the way to the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5.

  • Massive Battery: Moving from a 4,800 mAh battery to one that starts with a 6 (over 6,000 mAh). That is a massive increase of over 1,200 mAh.

  • Better Cameras: A 50-megapixel LYT 808 sensor (1/1.4 inch). This is larger and newer than the sensor in the original Open and significantly larger than the one in the Find N5.

The Verdict

When you look at that list of upgrades, it paints a picture of a device that is significantly better than the original. It would offer a larger screen, a massive jump in processing power, huge battery gains and superior cameras.

While we have not seen firm confirmation that the Find N6 will be rebadged as the OnePlus Open 2, the timing feels right. By the time this device would launch in early 2026, it will have been a long wait since late 2023. A device with these specs would be a true flagship upgrade that could convince original Open owners to finally switch.

I certainly hope OnePlus makes this move. The hardware jump is impressive enough to put them back on top of the foldable mountain
