Is The OnePlus Open 2… Not Coming?

UPDATE: This is now confirmed to be true. No Open 2.

I want to preface this post by saying that I 100% hope that I am wrong and that I have nothing to go off of other than unsubstantiated and unvetted rumors plus a bunch of circumstantial evidence. Disclaimer out of the way, I think there’s a chance that the OnePlus Open 2 just is not coming and I have several lines of reasoning for that.

There's a lot of buzz surrounding Oppo's upcoming foldable phone, the Find N5. However, the OnePlus Open 2 has been conspicuously absent from all the usual sources of leaks and social media chatter. This silence raises a question: Could it be that the OnePlus Open 2 is simply not going to be released?

A Tip

A few days ago I received a tip from a viewer stating that due to tariffs, OnePlus was not going to bother launching the Oppo Find N5 as the OnePlus Open 2 in North America. At the time, I brushed this off for a couple of reasons. 1, people tell me they know things all the time and they’re almost always making things up. 2, it seemed like the OnePlus Open was selling well in India so it’s hard to believe they’d just abandon that because selling the same phone is going to be harder this time around in the United States. Of course, BBK could just sell the Find N5 in India instead. That’s a big thing to watch for as we approach the February 20th event. If the N5 is coming to India, the Open 2 probably isn’t a thing.

Radio Silence

But some other things has just had me thinking over the last few days. Why has there been exactly zero buzz for a OnePlus Open 2? Why has it been all Oppo Find N5? The Oppo Social Media accounts have been posting almost daily, teasing the public with more and more. It’s honestly been a brilliant bit of marketing. Surely OnePlus would want to get in on this too, at least mentioning “hey, our version is coming too!” Instead, we’ve heard absolutely nothing.

Rewind back to the original Open. Something like two months before launch we have renders of the phone, complete with a OnePlus logo on the back. With this generation, all signs point towards this thing just not existing.

We even have a supposed leaked OnePlus roadmap from Weibo that rather auspiciously omits any mention of the Open 2.

Why the Find N5?

This next bit is a bit of a stretch, but it’s something to think about. Have you noticed that several American creators who did not review the Find N3 and instead reviewed the Open are posting about the Find N5 Oppo sent them? Why would Oppo be sending them a phone for review that’ll be more or less identical to the device their sister company is going to be sending them later? It doesn’t make a ton of sense, does it?

No Smoke, No Fire?

Like I said, I hope I am totally wrong on this and OnePlus is just waiting for the Find N5 to launch to begin their marketing campaign, but boy is there a lot of interesting looking smoke coming from.. somewhere. Could it be that tariffs would impact this Chinese company more and that lead to BBK’s math telling them it wasn’t worth the effort? OnePlus still positions themselves as a “good value” brand. What happens when their value is no longer an advantage vs the competition?

What of other regions that would have gotten the Open 2? Is that the reason for the “Global Simultaneous Launch” of the Find N5? If you’re not launching under the OnePlus name in the United States, how easy would it be for BBK to just pivot to the Find N5 version in the handful of other regions that would have gotten the Open 2? I’m honestly asking, I have no idea.

At this point, all we can do is speculate and I can assure you that I’m not the only one in tech media who is currently doing just that. If someone out there knows what’s going on, they’re keeping it to themselves.
