Preparing for the Z Fold 7: My Top 5 Observations from the Fold 6

It's been a couple of weeks since I swapped my primary SIM back into my Galaxy Z Fold 6, all in preparation for reviewing the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7. My goal was to refresh my memory on Samsung's foldables so I could approach the Fold 7 with a clear picture of what has improved, remained the same or even gotten worse. Here are my five most important observations.

Camera Performance: Still Room for Improvement

Despite the primary camera performance being quite solid, video performance on the Fold 6 is mediocre at best. White balance can be inconsistent, low-light footage is often grainy and the focus tends to wander when filming other phones for b-roll. For the Fold 7, I am really hoping to see significant advancements in camera quality, especially in these areas. Given the switch to a 200mp sensor that is 44% larger than last year’s, I think there’s decent odds some of this could be fixed. After all, I don’t see any of this on my S25 Ultra which uses a similar sensor.

Display Dynamics: Wider is Better

As I noted in my initial review, the cover screen on the Fold 6 is almost wide enough for me to not notice anything is off. However, I consistently miss the wider inner screen I’m used to on my Find N5 or Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Given that the Fold 7's cover display is getting wider, this means we’re also getting a significantly wider inner screen. This is one of the features I am most looking forward to.

For now, everything just feels more cramped than I’d like.

Design and Portability: Shedding Some Bulk

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 is a chonker. Weighing 239g and measuring 12.6mm thick when closed, these dimensions feel substantial in 2025. I am very much looking forward to the Fold 7's anticipated dimensions of 8.9mm thick and 215g. This reduction in thickness and weight should make a noticeable difference in daily use and seeing as how the align almost perfectly with my Find N5, I think I know exactly how big of a deal that will be for me.

Battery Life: Good Enough, But Not Great

Battery life on the Fold 6 is generally okay. It can usually get me through the day, but I do also have access to chargers literally everywhere I go. It’s trivial for me to plop my phone down on a charger at my desk, by my couch or in the car. While it doesn’t charge as insanely fast as some other OEM's, I haven’t had a single day where the thing went dead. It’s really been a non-issue for me. While the Oppo Find N5 might offer superior battery performance, if the Fold 7 maintains a similar level of battery life to the Fold 6, I'll be perfectly fine.

The Road Ahead for Foldables

Overall, my time with the Galaxy Z Fold 6 has highlighted key areas where the Fold 7 can truly shine. Improvements in camera quality, a wider inner display, a thinner lighter design and consistent battery life would make the Galaxy Z Fold 7 a compelling upgrade. I am excited to see if Samsung delivers on these fronts, further refining the foldable experience.
