Samsung Explores Passport Z Fold Design In Leaked Survey

If you’ve been waiting for Samsung to shake up the Galaxy Z Fold formula, a new development suggests they are at least asking the right questions.

As we’ve discussed before, we think Samsung is working on a second Fold model for next year alongside the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8. Previous leaks hinted that this mystery device would have a slightly wider set of screens - something many of us have been asking for over the years. According to Ice Universe, this second Z Fold 8 might not be all that much wider compared to what we already have. Rather puzzlingly, he has claimed the second Fold will have a 2:1 cover screen and a square 1:1 inner screen.

That makes it basically a dead ringer for the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, which isn’t all that different from the Galaxy Z Fold 7 we already have.

It’s hard to imagine this small of a change being enough to warrant making a second device. Logically, there has to be something else to differentiate a device like this from the Fold 7/8. Whether it’s the cameras, battery or price, there has to be more to the story. Simply being slightly wider just can’t possibly be enough.

But what about being a lot wider..?

Passport Design

According to a report from SammyGuru, Samsung has been surveying users about potential future form factors. One of the concepts shown off is a "passport-style" device—wider and shorter than the current Fold, looking a bit like a modern take on the Surface Duo but with a continuous folding screen. Also, notice how the device in these mock-ups show the power button and volume rocker on the top of the device. When unfolded, the hole-punch selfie camera in on the far left, implying this device would be rotated for selfies. This almost puts me in the mind of the Huawei Pura X.

It would certainly make sense for them to explore this.

The industry seems to be trending in that direction. Rumors have been circulating that Apple’s eventual foldable could adopt a similar short and wide "passport" footprint. We’re also seeing hints that Motorola might be preparing a book-style foldable that could follow a similar path.

If Samsung wants to stay ahead of the curve (or just match what the competition is planning), having a device like this in the pipeline would be a smart move. For now, though, all we really know is that they are thinking about it—and for those of us who have wanted a wider cover screen, that's at least a step in the right direction.
