Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra: S Pen Facing Potential Downgrade?
Rumors are now beginning to spread of a significant change to the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra's iconic S Pen - and they aren’t great.. Leaker Ishan Agarwal, citing retail sources, suggests that Samsung may be removing Bluetooth functionality from the stylus in its upcoming flagship phone. While it’s very important to keep in mind that this is just a rumor at the moment, if it ends up being true it could lead to several features going a way. As noted in his Tweet, popular features like Air Actions, which allow users to navigate their phones by waving their S Pen around like Harry Potter and the ability to use the S Pen as a remote for the camera could be going to way of the dodo.
In theory, other features like Air Command should still work. This allows users to quickly access a menu of shortcuts for S Pen related tasks and apps. We’ve seen this be done with Samsung’s devices which use a passive stylus, so it should work here as well.
Why the Change?
If Samsung makes this move there will obviously be reasons, even if they might be hard to come up with. For one, It could be a cost-cutting measure by Samsung. I can’t image they’ll be saving much, but it has to be something. Another tiny benefit will go to the battery life of the phone. Not having to be connected to the stylus will reduce battery drain, but only by a tiny amount.
It’s entirely possible that Samsung has data that tells them people just aren’t using these bluetooth reliant features and because of that if there is any benefit to be had, removing it is the right call.
Going a step beyond that, we’ve seen reports the indicate very few people use the S Pen at all.. Could Samsung be slowing deprioritizing the Pen as it slowly considers giving it the axe altogether? Honestly, even for me the idea of the pen being there is nice, even if I literally never use it. It adds something to the package that shifts the way I perceive the phone. It makes it feel more like a powerhouse to me, even if that effect is a placebo.
Even if the S Pen gets a downgrade there are a few things to be excited about with the S25 line of devices. For the Ultra, we’re getting an upgraded ultrawide camera, a brighter screen, flatter side rails with rounded corners and of course the new 8 Elite chip. Part of me wants to point out how far too much is staying the same, but we did say that about the S24 Ultra and it outsold the S23, so who knows.
Sales Figures
Digging a bit deeper into last years sales totals, we have these apparently accurate numbers from Jukanlosreve. As surprising as it might be, the S24 did apparently outsell the S23 with very little in the way of hardware changes to drive that. Were people enamored with the idea of AI featuers? Flat edges? Was the economy simply trending in the right direction? It’s hard to say.
