Samsung’s Sketch to Image Will Take on Google’s Magic Editor with Multi-Modal Enhancements
When Samsung’s Sketch to Image was first shown at their Z Fold 6 event I was honestly pretty blown away. The ability to scribble something down on top of an image and watch as the AI recognizes that thing and then creates it.. Amazing. In practice, it works pretty much like that too. You can draw sunglasses on your dog. I mean, come on.
Here’s the problem though - not long after that feature debuted, the Pixel 9 launched with a new feature for their AI based image manipulator. Reimagine allows users to do essentially the same thing by selecting an area and typing what they want to see. In practice, I find that this works better than Sketch to Image for one simple reason: I can describe something easier than I can draw it. The AI is fully capable of understanding my words and then putting that thing right where it makes sense, more often than not.
Today with a new blog post, Samsung looks to be taking a major step towards addressing this deficiency. They say that soon Sketch to Image will go beyond using the input of a pen or finger, no longer relying on your ability to draw. It’ll now become a multimodal system that will allow you to use typed words or your voice to tell your phone what to generate. The example they gave was generating a cat in a spacesuit. Truly a worth cause. Rather than needing to draw a cat in a space suit, you can just draw the cat and type “spacesuit” and it should figure it out.
Honestly, I'm happy Samsung is making these changes. As cool as "sketch to image" is, it feels a bit behind what Google is doing. It's one of those situations where the concept might be cooler, but the execution is harder for the average person to use. Google seems to have gotten it right straight off the bat.
That being said, combining Samsung's novel approach with Google's approach might create the best of both worlds.
