What's the Best CapCut Replacement Video Editor for Android?

Maybe you’ve missed the news, but this little app called CapCut has just been banned in the United States. Along with TikTok several other apps by ByteDance have also gotten the axe. On of those said apps was CapCut, which was one of the best and most popular free video editors on Android. I've installed a whole bunch of other video editors on my Pixel 9 Pro Fold, and I'm going to try to edit a quick video in each of them. Hopefully, I'll be able to determine which, if any, of these can serve as a suitable replacement for CapCut.

Disclaimer: This is not meant to be seen as an in-depth review of each app. CapCut was super easy to jump in and use without much effort. If I couldn't quickly figure out how to add a second video track or why my track was invisible, that's a knock. Feel free to explain how to fix the issues I saw though. It might help someone later. For me though, I'm looking for an app that replicates CapCut's ease of use.

Blurrr

The first app I'm going to try is called Blur. It has a nice little splash screen that gives you the idea that you have multiple different layers and tracks and things like that. However, when I try to start a new project, I got a network error. I'm not sure if this is a problem with the app or with my phone, but it's not a good start.

I'm finally able to start a new project, and it looks very similar to CapCut. I'm able to add my main clip and it seems to be pretty smooth. However, when I try to add my “Subscribe” animation, I find that the only way to cut out the green screen background is to use their cutout feature, which is behind an adwall or a premium subscription. This is a bit of a bummer for me.

Overall, I would say that Blur is pretty decent. It's very similar to CapCut in a lot of ways, but there are some weird things going on. They may be having some server issues or something, but that stuff is odd to me.

Filmora

Next on the list is Filmora. I actually use Filmora to edit on my computer, I was lucky enough to have bought it back before they wanted a monthly payment. Today, it’s hard to recommend on PC due to this. No surprise, the mobile app is about the same. There is a one-time payment option, but I don't want to give them any money. So, we're just going to skip past that.

The main screen seems decent. They're really leaning into the AI stuff, which I'm sure everybody's going to love. One good thing is that like Blurrr, Filmora allows you to easily play with multiple video tracks. What’s weird is that when I placed my Subscribe button video one track above my main clip… I just couldn’t see it? Nothing was there.. The Chroma Key function was able to easily remove the green screen, but again.. I just couldn’t see the track..

I'm also not able to export in 1080p without paying for it. So, we're just going to move on from Filmora. There's potential here, but the interface isn't great and there are some weird things going on.

Adobe Premiere Rush

Next up, we have Adobe Premiere Rush. I'm not really someone that ever uses these sorts of Adobe products, but maybe this will change that.

Rush has a nice, pretty easy to use interface that allows for multiple video tracks - Great! The only real issue I see is that I can find no way to do a Chrome Key, so my subscribe button is not an option. You’ll also need to pay to output anything over 1080P.

Overall, Premiere Rush seems okay. It's not perfect, but it's a decent option.

VN

Next up, we have a video editor called VN. This looks very similar to CapCut as well.

Shockingly, VN seems to tick every box. Not only can I use multiple tracks, I am also able to use my sub button through a Chrome Key option - even if said option was tucked away a little bit.

I'm able to export in 1080p and 4K. So, that's a big plus.

Viva Video

Next up is Viva Video. This one has a 3-day free trial, then it's $36 a year. I'm not going to do that. The interface doesn't look great. It's probably not scaling well to a larger screen.

I'm able to add my main clip and my green screen clip. I'm also able to put the green screen clip on top of the main clip.

However, there's a watermark, and you have to pay to remove it as well as a 5 minute export cap. We’re moving on.

Vita

Next up is an application named for one of my favorite Sony handhelds, Vita.

This one is pretty clean and decent looking. Like some others, Vita has an easy Chrome Key option, but I can’t seem to find a way to add a second video track so that I can put my button on top of the other track. What good does it do my to be able to remove a background if I can’t then put that on top of something else? Maybe I’m missing something..

LumaFusion

Next up is Luma Fusion. This one is a little bit different because it's not free. It's $29.99. However, it's probably the most feature-rich and complete one of all of these. It's also a one-time purchase.

LumaFusion stands far above the others on this list as it can do pretty much anything a desktop editor can do. Tracks, chroma key, whatever you want and it all works as expected. The only real downsides are the price and the learning curve, which will be a bit steeper.

YouCut

Next up is YouCut. This one has an AI button right there on the home screen which I’m sure everyone will love. This one is pretty basic and doesn't have a lot of features. If all you need is a single track, basic cuts… This might be okay.

PowerDirector

Next up is PowerDirector. For whatever reason I had it in my head that it was a pretty feature-rich video editor. But as I dug in, I found that that's not really the case. The interface was clunky, moving tracks around barely worked, there are far too many prompts to pay for things I need like their cutout tool.

Overall, I'm not impressed with PowerDirector.

InShot

The last one left is InShot. Much like some others, this one only has the one track. You can use a Chroma Key, but that instantly adds a water mark they want money to remove. There are better options, even if it looks very much like CapCut.

Conclusion

So, what's the best CapCut replacement video editor for Android? If you’re willing to pay a bit and learn a bit.. It’s LumaFusion all day long. Other wise, I've narrowed it down to two options: Premiere Rush and VN.

Premiere Rush is a good option if you're looking for something that's simple and straightforward. It does pretty much everything you need it to do.

However, if you're looking for something that's more feature-rich, then VN is the better option. It has a lot of features, including a chroma key cutout.

Overall and for me, I think VN is the best CapCut replacement video editor for Android.
