Huawei Introduces Extra-Wide Flip Phone, Pura X

There are few things I love more than when a tech company takes something that seems obvious, a standard that no one else is bothering to play with and takes things in a new direction just to see what would happen. With the Pura X, Huawei has done just that with the flip phone concept.

The Huawei Pura X might be the most unique folding OLED flip phone we’ve seen yet. Unlike Infinix’s design, this phone still only folds once, but rather then having a normal phone aspect ratio that folds in half, this device has a large 6.3-inch 16:10 inner display that folds to reveal a 3.5-ich square cover display.

The utility of a wider screen will likely be lost on some, but as a former Surface Duo user, this looks right up my ally. 16:9 video content will have much smaller black bars when compared to a phone like the Z Fold 6 which has a 22:9 aspect ratio.

You’ll also have a very different splitscreen multitasking experience with a screen like this as this is an aspect ratio that many tablets use. Granted, it’s a lot smaller than most tablets, but the shape of each app should be more comfortable than the squares you’d have on a traditionally shaped phone.

Huawei has also built quite a bit of functionality into that cover display, allowing users to message, call and more from it alone. It’s unclear at this moment if you can launch any application or if there are restrictions there. From the trailer, it looks to be quite flexible.
