Is Samsung Testing Larger and Cheaper Z Fold 8 Follow-ups?

Shorter, wider, passport-style foldables like the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the iPhone Duo are selling remarkably well. Their success has been strong enough that many major OEMs are now introducing similar compact, wide designs into their own lineups. That momentum naturally raises a question about where Samsung goes from here and how they plan to expand their foldable lineup.

A few weeks back, a tweet from TheGalox on Twitter began circulating, claiming that the 2027 Galaxy Z lineup is going to be massive. The post hinted at a Z Slide alongside a Galaxy Z Fold 9 Pro. Exactly what a Z Fold 9 Pro represents remains open to interpretation. Right now, we have the Z Fold 8 Ultra and the standard Z Fold 8, which introduced the shorter, wider form factor with a streamlined two-camera setup.

Would a 9 Pro serve as an upgraded passport-style device with an extra camera and a larger battery, or would Samsung push the Ultra specs higher, shifting the Pro into the middle slot? Alternatively, the Fold 9 Pro could be the direct successor to the current layout while the standard Fold 9 gets repositioned as a lower-cost FE model.

Sorting Leaks From Supply Chain Reports

When that initial rumor dropped, it was worth taking with a grain of salt. Known industry leakers like Ice Universe, Evan Blass, and OnLeaks typically have direct insider sources, whereas accounts like Anthony often aggregate existing online reports and add their own commentary. At the time, there were no model numbers, code names, or One UI software references to back up the claims.

However, a new post from a well-known Naver blog user adds a much more solid angle to the discussion. While this source has had a mixed track record over the years, they frequently cite direct component and supply chain details.

According to translations of the report, Samsung's display suppliers are currently testing two distinct versions for the successor to the Z Fold 8 wide form factor, driven by market demand that has significantly exceeded internal expectations.

The first variant being tested increases the overall screen size. While a larger canvas sounds appealing on paper, scaling up a passport-style phone risks missing the core appeal of the design. The current form factor works because it offers comfortable one-handed usability on the outside while opening up to a spacious inner display. Making it wider or taller could make it unwieldy for average hand sizes.

The second variant keeps the exact footprint of the current Z Fold 8 but dials back select hardware specifications to achieve a lower price point. Speculation suggests this model could swap in an Exynos processor and trim down secondary camera sensors to bring the retail price closer to $1,500 or $1,600.

Given the competition entering the space, a lower barrier to entry for the passport form factor makes a lot of sense. A lineup featuring a Fold 9 FE, a standard Fold 9, and a high-end Fold 9 Ultra would give buyers a clear progression of choices without sacrificing the ergonomic balance that made the original wide layout popular.

Samsung is expected to make a final decision on which path to take shortly, and we will keep tracking supply chain developments as concrete details emerge.
