My Galaxy Z Fold 9 Wishlist
It is amazing how much you can overlook on a phone when the hardware, form factor and overall in-hand feel are nailed. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is a genuinely solid device across the board, but there are definitely a few things I want to see changed or improved on the Galaxy Z Fold 9, all while keeping this current form factor intact.
Fix the Camera Layout and Sensor
The vertical, offset camera layout needs to go. Having the lenses stacked off to the left creates an annoying wobble whenever you set the phone down on a flat surface and try to tap on it. It is not a complete dealbreaker, but it gets frustrating fast. Rotating the setup horizontally or centering it would solve the problem entirely.
While updating that module, it is time to bring a dedicated telephoto camera back. Digital cropping on the primary sensor works decently well, but an expensive flagship foldable deserves a real 3x optical sensor with larger pixels rather than a tiny, compromised sensor. Other foldables on the market are already delivering large 3x sensors, and Samsung needs to match that quality.
Push Battery Capacity with Silicon Tech
Getting five to seven hours of screen-on time on the current model is serviceable, but we can do better. Competitors have been utilizing silicon-carbon battery technology to pack massive capacities into ultra-thin devices without running into safety issues.
Samsung has historically played it extremely safe with battery tech, which is understandable given past history, but the industry has proven this newer tech works. Pushing past a 5,000 mAh capacity on the Z Fold 9 would eliminate so much unnecessary battery anxiety. You do not even need crazy charging speeds like 80W, just give us a larger, modern capacity.
True Stereo Speaker Placement
The current speaker layout remains a major weak spot. Placing both speakers on the same side means that when you hold the device horizontally to watch a video, show or movie, the audio pulls heavily to the left. The stereo channels essentially turn into two left channels, completely ruining separation.
Placing one speaker on the top left and the other on the bottom right solves this immediately, providing proper left and right channel separation regardless of which way the phone is rotated. True stereo separation is easily perceptible on a device this size, and fixing the physical placement would drastically elevate the media experience.
Double Down on Anti-Reflective Displays
The inner screen engineering on the current model is gorgeous, and the anti-reflective screen protector makes a massive difference compared to older generations. Side by side with previous folds, the glare reduction is immediately noticeable.
Samsung should push that anti-reflective tech even further on the Z Fold 9 to match what we see on the Ultra series. Skip the privacy screen gimmicks and focus purely on reflection handling, then make sure that same anti-reflective treatment makes its way onto the outer cover screen as well.
Relocate the Inner Selfie Camera
The inner display looks fantastic, but the camera placement could use a simple tweak. Moving the cutout further into the corner keeps it out of the primary viewing area during media playback without ruining video call framing.
Under-display cameras tend to suffer from poor image quality and distracting pixel artifacts that can cause visual strain, so keeping a traditional punch-hole makes sense. Shifting that cutout over by about an inch gets it out of the way of your content while preserving camera clarity.
The foundation of this current foldable hardware is incredible, but addressing the camera module, battery capacity, speaker orientation and screen coatings on the Galaxy Z Fold 9 would turn a great device into an exceptional one.
