OnePlus Open’s Sister Device is Half as Thick as an iPhone.. But Why?

As we creep closer and closer to the February launch of the Oppo Find N5 (the sister device to the OnePlus Open) it’s clear what the marketing strategy from Oppo is - keep posting photos of the phone that show just how insanely thin the thing is.

Today, we have another post from Oppo Series Product Manager Zhou Yibao on Weibo that provides our best look at the upcoming foldable yet.

Continuing the new tradition of placing the phone next to random household objects, we have a much nicer shot of the Find N5 next to a couple of coins and a stack of 4 ID cards. These two are similar to what we were shown in a prior post, but obviously a lot clearer.

I think the next two images are much, much more interesting though. We see the Find N5 next to an iPhone model and it is simply absurdly thinner. In Yibao’s post, he indicates that the Find N5’s thickness is basically running up against the thickness of the USB C port and these images confirm exactly that. It’s hard to see how a phone can get much thinner while maintaining a USB C port.

Obviously, insane thickness is probably not the number one must-have feature for very many people, likely falling reasonably behind more logical things like a bigger battery, faster charging, a faster SOC, better camera, etc. The good news is that this device is likely to give us all of those things too.

If the rumors are to be believed, the Find N5 is expected to run the new Snapdragon 8 Elite, a battery somewhere around the 5,500mAh range, a triple 50MP camera setup that should share some DNA with the OnePlus 13 and it’s likely to have faster charging as well. For those worried about the durability of a device this thin, which seems reasonable, word is they've improved durability with the use of titanium.

Since pretty much every box is tipped, all the way down to the new Oxygen OS 15 being pretty darn good, we’re free to nerd out over just how insanely thin this thing is.

It may very well end up being the world’s thinnest foldable, as Yibao claimed a while back.. Keep in mind that the current record holder in that regard is the Honor Magic V3 which measures in at 4.35mm thick when opened. That’s a damn hard feat to top, but these pictures indicate Oppo may have pulled it off. Keep in mind that a standard USB C port is less than 3mm thick and this thing appears to be barely thicker than that and it also seems to be around half the thickness of an 8.25mm iPhone. That would place it near 4.1mm.

Either way, this incredible looking foldable should be unveiled as soon as February.
