Samsung's Galaxy Z TriFold Could Be Unveiled Soon at a September Event
A new leak from the reliable Ice Universe on Weibo suggests that Samsung may be preparing for a major announcement. The rumor points to a fourth Galaxy Unpacked event being held on September 29 in South Korea, where the company could unveil a new dual-hinged foldable phone.
TriFold Incoming
The rumored device colloquially called the Galaxy TriFold has been making the rounds in rumors for months with patents apparently revealing the design all the way back in January. This innovative design would make Samsung the second OEM, behind Huawei, to launch a foldable with not one, but two hinges.
The rumored Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold differs from Huawei’s Mate XT in terms of folding mechanisms. The Galaxy Z TriFold is expected to feature a G-shaped fold, where the two outer panels fold inward to fully enclose and protect the main display. This design is similar to a book that closes from both sides, keeping the delicate screen safe when the device is not in use. In contrast, the Huawei Mate XT uses a Z-shaped fold. This design allows the device to fold both inward and outward, meaning a portion of the main screen is left exposed on the exterior of the device when it's closed. This outward-folding approach creates a large, continuous display when unfolded, but it also leaves the screen more vulnerable to scratches or damage. It also allows the device to have multiple different modes - something Samsung’s device will lack.
While a lot of the information about the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold is still based on rumors, several reports have offered insights into its potential specifications. The device is expected to be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset and may feature a triple camera system, similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 7. The rumored phone is also said to have a 9.9-inch display when fully unfolded, offering a tablet-like experience, and a 6.49-inch screen when folded. In terms of battery, leaks point to a silicon-carbon battery, although the source of this leak ended up getting a ton wrong about the Z Fold 7.
It Won’t Be Cheap..
This high-end technology will allegedly come with a hefty price tag. Previous leaks have indicated the tri-fold device could be priced upwards of 4 million KRW, which is roughly $2,930. Similarly to the Z Fold Special Edition, all indications are that this device will launch first in South Korea and China with a broader release coming later if sales are strong. I would expect that broader release to come with a second generation product, following the path that the SE took. For all intents and purposes, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is a Special Edition 2. Samsung could be using the same regions as with that Z Fold as a test-bed for their new type of folding device.
Before Apple Makes a Move
As Apple continues to delay its entry into the foldable phone market, with many reports now pointing to a potential launch in 2026 or even later, its primary competitor is already pushing the boundaries of the technology. Before Apple can Finalize its first foldable device, likely a book-style phone similar to the current Galaxy Z Fold, Samsung is set to release a dual-hinged device. This stark contrast in strategy highlights a key difference in their approach to innovation, with Samsung more rapidly evolving the technology while Apple takes a more cautious, deliberate path.
