The iPhone Fold is Going to Sell Really Well

We do not know how much it is going to cost, when it is going to arrive, or what Apple will officially call it. However, we can safely assume one massive thing about the upcoming foldable iPhone, it is going to sell incredibly well.

If you have been keeping an eye on the tech headlines, you already know that the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is selling extremely well. A recent article from the South Korean publication Business Post featured a Samsung official acknowledging that units are moving much faster than anticipated. Even though Samsung increased production targets for the Fold 8 to a level 40% higher than the Z Fold 8 Ultra, they are still running into supply shortages in several regions. Estimates suggest that pre-order volume for the Fold 8 has tripled compared to the Fold 7, reaching 80% of the pre-order volume of the mainstream Galaxy S26.

That is wild, especially considering the hardware. The Fold 8 does not have jaw-dropping specs, the camera setup is standard without a telephoto lens, and the 4,800 mAh battery could definitely be larger if they utilized silicon-carbon tech. Yet, based almost entirely on the new form factor, Samsung is moving more foldables than ever. This is the absolute best indicator that Apple is about to absolutely crush the market with their own foldable iPhone.

The Passport Form Factor is Winning

The upcoming iPhone Fold is going to look remarkably similar to what Samsung just put out. It is shorter and wider, adopting a passport-style design. Leaks, CAD renders, and full dummy units sent out to case makers give us a very clear picture of the device. Whether it is closed, opened up to reveal the main inner display, or viewed from the back, the footprint is practically identical to Samsung's latest release.

This similarity is no coincidence. Samsung likely caught wind that Apple was slowly, methodically developing this specific footprint, and they decided to beat them to the punch. The market response proves it was the right move. The design resonates with people.

If Android users are looking at this form factor and deciding it is finally time to buy, imagine what will happen when Apple introduces it to their ecosystem. This device is essentially an iPad mini that folds in half into a compact, adorable phone. It is incredibly easy to use with one hand, but it sacrifices nothing when it comes to screen real estate. iPhone fans are going to buy it like gangbusters.

The Evidence is Piling Up

We know this device is well on its way. Macworld published an extensive breakdown tracking these exact developments. Deep inside the iOS 27 code, developers have uncovered clear references to distinct fold states and specific hinge angle degrees. Apple is actively building the software foundation for this hardware. The existence of physical dummy units means case manufacturers are already tailoring their production lines.

Reports also point to Apple utilizing liquid metal tech in the hinge alongside unique patents aimed at minimizing the screen crease. This explains why Samsung has pushed so hard to reduce their own crease, they want to stay competitive with Apple's incoming build quality. Even though Samsung is expected to supply the actual display panels for the iPhone Fold, the hinge mechanism belongs entirely to Apple, and that makes all the difference.

Reasonable Pricing and Market Reality

Rumors regarding price points have fluctuated wildly, occasionally touching $2,500, but the most recent figure floating around sits at $1,999. With the Z Fold 8 sitting at $1,899, this feels incredibly realistic. Apple is highly unlikely to launch a device with a very similar footprint and hardware package while charging a $600 premium over Samsung. They will want to keep it competitive, right around that $2,000 threshold.

To keep expectations grounded, the iPhone Fold isn't going to instantly match the massive volume of a standard Pro Max. Apple sells an obscene number of traditional smartphones. The success of this phone should be measured against the existing foldable market, not the standard iPhone lineup. On that scale, there is a solid shot that Apple easily outsells the Z Fold 8. Apple understands its customer base, and iPhone users are fiercely loyal. They have spent years watching generations of Android foldables mature. Now that the concept is mainstream and thoroughly tested, Apple users are ready to jump in.

This is actually phenomenal news for the entire industry. Even as someone who strictly uses Android and has no personal interest in switching to iOS, Apple entering the fold is a massive win. A rising tide lifts all boats. We are sitting at a massive inflection point where foldables are capturing the mainstream market despite their premium pricing. The iPhone Fold is simply going to accelerate that shift, and the current rumors suggest we might get our first official look as early as September.
