Vivo X Fold 5: World’s Lightest Book Foldable?

The foldable phone arms race continues to heat up and Vivo is set to introduce its latest contender the X Fold 5. Expected to debut in China this month with a global rollout to follow in early July, Vivo appears ready to make an impression with its specifications in an increasingly competitive market.

According to a video I pulled from Weibo, the X Fold 5 will push the weight of down below the 219g mark that made last year’s X Fold 3 the “lightest foldable to date.” It's also rumored to be quite thin measuring 4.3mm when unfolded and 9.33mm when folded. Keep in mind that it’s unclear whether or not that measurement includes the protruding bezel present around the inner screen or not. My assumption would be that it does not as the 4.3mm opened figure is more than doubled when closed. For context, the Oppo Find N5 is listed at 4.2mm, but measures closer to 4.5mm. This has lead to lots of confusion over whether the upcoming Z Fold 7 will be 3.9mm as stated by Ice Universe, or 4.5mm as stated by OnLeaks.

For the display, the X Fold 5 is said to feature an 8.03-inch AMOLED inner display with a 2K+ resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. The cover display is a 6.53-inch LTPO OLED also with a 120Hz refresh rate.

Under the hood the device is anticipated to run on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. It is expected to be offered with up to 16GB of RAM and storage options potentially reaching 1TB.

Battery capacity is another area where the X Fold 5 aims to stand out. It's rumored to pack a 6,000mAh battery which would be a significant size for a foldable device. Charging capabilities include 90W wired fast charging and 30W wireless charging. Absolutely bonkers specs here.

For photography, the X Fold 5 is said to include a triple rear camera setup. This comprises three 50-megapixel sensors: a 50MP Sony IMX921 primary sensor, a 50MP ultra-wide lens with autofocus, and a 50MP Sony IMX882 periscope telephoto lens offering 3x optical zoom. On the front there will be two 32-megapixel selfie cameras one for the cover screen and one for the inner screen.

Overall the Vivo X Fold 5 appears to be a well-equipped entry into the competitive foldable phone space offering a blend of performance design and notable battery capacity. We will see how it fares once it officially launches.

As of now there's no official information regarding the launch timeframe price or color variants of the Vivo X Fold 5. For reference the X Fold 3 can currently be imported for around $1100 USD. It remains to be seen whether using the same chipset will allow Vivo to offer the X Fold 5 at a similar or lower price point.
