Vivo’s X Fold6 Has An Insane Trick
At this point, I have gotten to use so many different folding phones from so many different brands. I am so incredibly privileged to be able to do this for a living. It is absolutely crazy. I have used so many great devices from Samsung, Google, Honor, Oppo and Moto. There are a couple of brands I haven't really hit yet, like a Xiaomi foldable or Huawei. However, there is another brand that I have had my eye on for a while, and that is Vivo.
The Evolution of Vivo's Multitasking
Maybe you remember last year when they showed off the Vivo X Fold 5. It had this crazy multitasking setup that is kind of reminiscent of Stage Manager over on the iPad, where you have your main app in the center and the other applications you are running sort of floating off to the side. I made a video breaking this down, and I remember thinking it looked so smooth and cool. You guys know that I love the carousel view on the Razer Fold because there is just something really nice about it, but this looks like an even better version of that concept.
The Vivo X Fold 6 Specifications
Today we have news breaking on the Vivo X Fold 6. We have some specifications, and the hardware definitely looks pretty darn interesting. Looking at a write-up from GSM Arena where they put everything together, we can go through the details.
First off, Vivo has already confirmed that this thing is going to be running the MediaTek Dimensity 9400 Super Edition. Rather than running the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon, they are going with a Dimensity chip. I find this to be a little bit interesting, but I don't think it is going to be a problem. These Dimensity chips have gotten really good, and the 9500 Super is going to be more than good enough. I believe this is a 3nm process, whereas something like the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 is a 2nm process. The Snapdragon is going to be faster overall, but this should not be an issue.
We are going to get basically an 8-inch screen with Samsung's M14 material, so the screens are going to be really nice on this thing. They are claiming a peak brightness of 5,000 nits, which, like I keep telling you guys, you should just ignore. Wait until someone has the thing in hand, takes it outside and compares it to something like the Fold 7 or Fold 8 to really know how bright it gets.
These companies are so bad about giving nit numbers that are not in any way reflective of what you see in real life. Let me get on my soapbox here for just a brief moment. To get these numbers, they will take the screen, shut off all the pixels except for a small cluster, put all of their power into those pixels and measure 5,000 nits. They call it 5,000 nits peak brightness, but in reality, the screen itself is going to peak much lower during regular use, somewhere in the 2,000ish range. There is a huge difference between peak and global illumination, which is the actual metric, but companies never give the global illumination because they want to advertise these big numbers. The screens are going to be more than fine, though.
They also feature a 1-nit ultra-low brightness mode, which is actually really important. This is something on my Titan 2 Elite that bugs me a little bit because it doesn't go dim enough. Even with the extra dim mode enabled, it is still not quite dark enough.
Next-Level Camera Hardware
The cameras look really good. There is a 200-megapixel primary camera using Samsung's 1/1.4-inch HPV sensor. That is still a little bit smaller than what we have on something like the Razer Fold, but it is still a very large sensor with very high resolution. There is also going to be a telephoto lens that is Zeiss APO certified, utilizing a Sony LYT602 sensor. It will probably be a 3x or 3.5x zoom, which is a really solid setup.
What makes this really tempting to me is that the Fold 6 is going to be compatible with that 200 mm teleconverter G2. There is going to be a case allowing you to put that massive lens right onto the back of the fold. If you haven't seen photo samples of what this thing is capable of, it is crazy. It is so far beyond what a normal phone is able to do. With that attached, this device could be absolutely insane. It looks crazy, but man oh man, is that tempting.
Vivo's photography processing is already really good, which is a huge part of why this phone is tempting to me. I like their processing, and it looks like they have really got this dialed in and down to a science. When you add on this crazy telephoto converter, it looks pretty cool.
Battery, Colors and Final Thoughts
There are rumors that this thing might top all of this off with a 6900 milliamp battery. That is absolutely insane. It feels like Vivo and Honor are just competing to see who can shove the biggest battery into a foldable phone. This device is expected to debut later this month in China, so it is something you are going to have to import. There will be some hurdles to jump, but it looks like a very compelling package.
I also have to give them credit for offering a fun color. It is a blue-teal looking option that looks really good, and it almost seems to have a color-shift effect going on. I like that a lot.
In a world that is getting more and more crowded when it comes to these folding phones, there are so many amazing devices from OPPO, Honor, Moto, Samsung, Google, Xiaomi and Vivo. There are so many brands making phenomenal foldables. What do you think of this one? What do you think of that sort of Stage Manager multitasking? They are adding even more multitasking features to this device, and combined with the huge battery and compelling camera setup, this thing definitely has a chance to stand in there and trade punches with the competition.
