Was That Z Fold 8 Ultra Leak Just a Z Fold 7?

Yesterday, what appeared to be a massive leak of the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8 hit the internet, and it quickly started making its rounds across social media. The video in question turned heads because it showcased an incredibly shallow inner display crease, a design achievement that seemed to put Samsung on par with top-tier foldables like the Oppo Find N6.

Today, the plot thickened. Prominent tech tipster Ice Universe threw a wrench into the hype machine, claiming that the device floating around in that video isn't actually the Fold 8 at all. According to him, we are looking at a Galaxy Z Fold 7. We are going to dive back into the footage one more time to look closely at the details, analyze the hardware and see if we can figure out whether he is right or wrong.

Ice Universe laid out three main arguments to back up his claim, and his first point centers entirely on the hole-punch selfie camera cutout. According to him, the camera cutout on the cover display in the video is simply too large compared to the official-looking renders we have seen circulating over the last few months.

When you sit down and compare the video footage directly to those past renders, Ice Universe definitely has a point. The cutout on the cover screen does look noticeably bigger than the ultra-stealthy, tiny dot the renders led us to expect. I will say, however, that the selfie camera on that cover display in the renders looks exceptionally small, smaller than just about any selfie camera I have ever seen. In fact, the selfie camera on the base model Z Fold 8 is nowhere near that small, and I can say that with confidence because I have seen photos of that actual device.

On the flip side, the camera cutout for the inner main display in the video looks to be about the right size for a next-generation device. This leaves us with a classic tech dilemma. Is the device in the video actually an older model like the Fold 7, or did the original renders simply overstate how small Samsung would be able to make that outer selfie camera? It is honestly hard to say for sure.

The second claim Ice Universe puts forward involves the rear camera setup. He points out that the camera housing on the back of the phone doesn't line up with what we are expecting. Even though the video doesn't give us a completely flawless, clear look at the back of the device, you can see enough to notice that the individual camera rings have a distinct silver metallic finish.

According to Ice Universe, those rings should actually be black. If we look at the official-looking renders of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra that were recently published by Android Headlines, his argument gains a lot of ground. While those leaked renders don't show the phone from every imaginable angle, it is entirely accurate to say that none of them show a silver metallic ring around the lenses. They all point toward a darker, more unified aesthetic. Because of that contrast, this camera housing detail might just be the absolute smoking gun for his theory.

His third and final point hits on something that was definitely easy to spot in the video. Ice Universe points out that the inner display is still highly reflective. This is a critical detail because he claims the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra will be Samsung's first foldable to feature a brand-new anti-reflective inner display film, much like the treatment the Ultra slabs have received. I cannot personally fact-check whether that specific display film upgrade is locked in for the Fold 8 Ultra, but his subsequent claim is something we can absolutely analyze.

Ice Universe believes the device in the video is actually just a standard blue Galaxy Z Fold 7. Looking at the footage, the lighting would have to be incredibly strange for that phone to be a blue Fold 7. The color just does not look right for that model. It is entirely possible that the creator of the video intentionally manipulated the way the color renders to trick viewers. If this truly is a Fold 7, the explicit intention was to mislead people, given that the video boldly advertised the hardware as a Fold 8. Altering the color profile to disguise a familiar device is a trick we have seen before, so that explanation is certainly on the table.

The only thing that gives me pause with Ice Universe's theory is the actual appearance of the crease in the video, which simply does not match up with my own experience of the original Galaxy Z Fold 7. While it is true that the Fold 7 crease is basically nonexistent when you first take the device out of the box, that pristine screen does not last long. The crease develops incredibly quickly after just a handful of folds.

You can actually go back to my unboxing video and watch this play out in real time. When I first pull the device out of the box, the inner display is completely smooth. By the seven-minute mark of that video, after opening and closing it just a couple of times, a prominent crease has already formed. In this leaked footage, however, you can see the device being closed and opened repeatedly, yet the crease does not appear at all. It stays entirely flat.

I suppose it is possible that opening and closing the device just a single time in the video is not quite enough to alter the crease. It might take a second or third fold to trigger that change, similar to what you see in my unboxing video. Still, seeing it stay that flat is enough to give me pause.

I will also point out that Ice Universe is still claiming the Fold 8 Ultra will feature a very hard-to-detect crease, so that specific detail in the video isn't necessarily a fabrication. It might just be that we were being manipulated into thinking that is what we were seeing when we actually weren't. We could easily just be looking at a standard Fold 7 being held, shot, and folded strategically for clout.
