Xiaomi Goes Wide With the 18 Fold to Beat Apple to the Punch
Xiaomi is pulling back the curtain on its upcoming wide foldable ahead of schedule. The company revealed the Xiaomi 18 Fold prior to its official September 7 showcase, highlighting a complete design overhaul alongside major leaps in internal silicon and battery capacity.
The timing of this reveal is hardly random. Holding an unveiling on September 7 puts Xiaomi squarely ahead of Apple, which is widely expected to debut its first foldable, rumored as the iPhone Ultra, just two days later on September 9. Dropping design renders and flagship specs right now looks like a calculated attempt to set the hardware bar and steal some oxygen from Cupertino before Apple takes the stage.
In-House Power and a Massive 6,000mAh Battery
The most significant changes sit beneath the surface, where Xiaomi is introducing its in-house XRING O3 deca-core processor. Paired with next-generation LPDDR6 memory, the G2-Ultra NX GPU architecture and 8 integrated NX neural accelerators, early figures point to major gains. Xiaomi claims a 5.22 million AnTuTu score, paired with an 85% leap in graphics rendering, a 45% lift in AI performance and a 64% drop in power consumption over the prior generation.
Feeding that processor is a substantial 6,000mAh Jinshajiang battery. By utilizing high-density stacking and a 20% silicon content formulation, the pack reaches an energy density of 920 Wh/L to fit inside a folding profile. The phone supports fast top-offs as well, offering 67W wired charging alongside 50W wireless charging speeds.
Leica Visor and Wider Proportions
On the outside, the 18 Fold adopts a distinct horizontal rear visor co-engineered with Leica. Rather than sticking to a standard vertical camera bump in the corner, the wide racetrack housing spans the back with three lenses and an LED flash. This setup keeps the phone completely stable and flat on a desk, eliminating the uneven table wobble common on most book-style foldables.
The overall form factor leans into a wider profile, sporting a 5.38-inch cover panel on the exterior and opening up to a 7.58-inch primary display. The chassis relies on flat wraparound edges crafted from aerospace-grade 7-series aluminum, creating a clean, modern aesthetic in its revealed red colorway.
Structural Reinforcements and the Dragon Bone Hinge
Durability also received serious attention to handle everyday wear and tear. Xiaomi built the internal foldable display with dual-layer Ultra-Thin Glass for improved puncture resistance, while the external screen gets coated with Dragon Crystal Glass 3.0.
Supporting the folding mechanism is a redesigned dragon bone hinge featuring a water-drop profile, three-level linkages and full edge-to-edge protective framing. Xiaomi reports these physical upgrades yield a 258% increase in resistance against sharp-object strikes and a 214% improvement in steel-ball drop testing over the MIX Fold 4, directly targeting typical foldable durability concerns before hitting the market on September 7.
