Case Leak Injects Confusion Into Z Fold 8 Naming Rumors

A few days ago, I tried to visualize what the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8 devices would look like based on a recent color leak. It seemed pretty straightforward to guess the appearance based on those leaked names, but a fresh look at a couple of cases has thrown a massive wrench into the situation.

The Confusing Case Leaks

First, a leak from Muhammad showed third-party cases for the wider variant of the Galaxy Z Fold 8. The colors shown on these cases are very different from what the official color names suggested. We also saw a very similar case leak from Tarun for the taller, more traditional Ultra version.

The colors do not match up with expectations, which is confusing enough on its own, but the text on the packaging makes it even stranger. The taller model packaging reads "Galaxy Z Fold 8" instead of "Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra" which is the name everyone expected. Meanwhile, the wider model packaging says "Galaxy New Fold" instead of the standard naming convention. Samsung has a history of odd naming choices, so it is possible they might call the standard version the Galaxy New Fold and the Ultra version just the Galaxy Z Fold 8.

There is a massive catch that requires a big pinch of salt. A sharp-eyed commenter pointed out that these are likely knockoff cases from AliExpress because Samsung no longer makes conduit-style cases for their devices. After doing some digging, that claim seems accurate since Samsung skipped this case style for the Galaxy Z Fold 7. Knockoff companies frequently guess names on their packaging, but they do need accurate dimensions, dummy units and physical schematics to manufacture the cases ahead of time. They clearly have some insider data, even if the names on the packaging turn out to be a wild guess.

New Screen and Spec Rumors

Aside from the case mystery, more rumors are circulating about the display and colors. Ice Universe mentioned seeing the cream color Z Fold 8, describing it as pure white rather than a true cream shade. Another tipster going by Fire Universe on X shared details allegedly from an internal Samsung PDF. According to that leak, the violet color will match the S26 Ultra, the black version is pure black and Singapore retailers will only stock three standard colors while the rest remain online exclusives.

The most interesting claim from that leak points to a 3600 nits internal display for the Z Fold 8 Ultra. For context, the Z Fold 7 sits at 2600 nits. Many brands inflate their brightness ratings using peak brightness measurements, which only light up a tiny cluster of pixels on an otherwise dark screen. Samsung typically advertises global brightness, meaning the whole screen is lit up. If this 3600 nits figure represents true global brightness, it will be incredibly impressive and brighter than competing foldables claiming much higher peak numbers. Combining that brightness with an anti-glare coating on the inner and outer screens would be an excellent upgrade.

Looking Ahead to Launch

The official unveiling looks set for July 22, with shipping likely starting in early August. We are less than a month away from getting answers and eventually holding the devices in hand. Let me know in the comments if you want a comprehensive everything-you-should-know guide before the launch. Which model are you eyeing, or have you already jumped ship for another foldable?
