Google Unveils Googlebook, Tons of New Android Features

The latest edition of the Android Show gave us a look at Google's roadmap for 2026, and the primary takeaway is that the "operating system" is officially being rebranded as an "intelligence system." With Android 17 on the horizon, the focus is shifting away from manual app management and toward a proactive, automated experience powered by Gemini Intelligence.

Gemini Intelligence and Automation

The headlining feature is Gemini Intelligence, a deep integration of AI into the core of the phone. Rather than just being a chatbot you talk to, it is designed to handle "digital laundry," the tedious tasks of navigating between apps and filling out forms.

One of the more practical applications shown was a new intelligent autofill. Instead of hunting through your gallery for a photo of your passport to type in details, the system can securely pull that information from your Google ecosystem and populate forms with one tap.

Other notable automation features include:

  • Rambler: A Gboard feature that allows you to speak naturally, including all the "ums" and "likes," and transforms the transcript into a concise, professional message.

  • Multimodal Tasks: Users can take a photo of a brochure or flyer and ask Gemini to book a similar experience through apps like Expedia for a specific group size.

  • Create My Widget: A move toward "generative UI" where users can describe a specific need, such as "show me high-protein meal prep recipes," and the phone builds a custom widget on the fly.

Android 17 and Digital Well-being

Beyond the AI flashy stuff, Android 17 is introducing features aimed at "intentional" phone use. A new tool called Pause Point acts as a speed bump for mindless scrolling. If you try to open a distracting app, the phone pauses for 10 seconds, potentially showing you photos of your family or dogs to remind you of what you’d rather be doing instead of scrolling.

The update also includes:

  • Enhanced Instagram Integration: Flagship Android devices are getting optimized capture and upload settings, with side-by-side tests claiming video quality that finally matches or beats the leading competitor.

  • Smart Enhance and Sound Separation: New editing tools for Instagram that can sharpen old photos and isolate or remove background noise like wind from videos.

  • Expanded Quick Share: Quick Share is becoming compatible with AirDrop for supported hardware, and the iOS-to-Android transfer process has been overhauled to move home screen layouts and passwords wirelessly.

Android Auto

Android Auto is getting its biggest overhaul in years, featuring a redesigned UI that adapts to any screen size and an immersive 3D navigation mode in Google Maps that highlights stop signs and specific lane details. The update also turns the car into a mobile theater with 60 fps HD video playback while parked, while Gemini integration can now handle complex tasks like checking your emails to find an address or even telling you if a 65-inch TV box will fit in your specific trunk.

Googlebook

Google capped off this mini event by unveiling their newest attempt to reinvent the laptop: the Googlebook. This represents a massive shift for Google hardware, essentially mashing Android and Chrome OS together into a new kind of laptop that puts Gemini Intelligence at the very center of the experience. The standout feature is the Magic Pointer, an AI-powered cursor that "comes alive" with a wiggle to offer contextual suggestions, like drafting replies when hovering over dates or visualizing how new furniture would look in a photo of your nursery. The Googlebook also allows you to stream apps from your phone to your laptop to help you avoid distractions and keep track of your phone without having to pick it up, meaning you can stay in your workflow while handling quick tasks like checking a baby monitor or finishing a language lesson. Additionally, the new quick access file browser ensures your mobile photos and documents are just as reachable as your local ones, and you can even use natural language to build custom "super widgets" for your desktop that pull together flight info, hotel reservations, and countdowns for specific projects or trips.
