OnePlus Open 2 Fully Cancelled?
The OnePlus Open remains one of my favorite tech stories of the last few years. It was a device that truly disrupted the market and made Samsung look like they were standing still. Because that first phone was so incredible, the wait for a successor has been agonizing. We have spent months parsing through Oppo leaks to find clues about a potential OnePlus Open 2.
OnePlus actually addressed the missing follow-up to the original Open directly in a previous community update. They celebrated the massive success of their first foldable while explaining the decision to not release a successor for that specific year. This message explicitly noted that the pause did not signify a departure from the foldable category. Instead, they teased a commitment to incorporating sophisticated engineering and cutting-edge materials into future products. This led many of us to believe they were simply skipping a generation to ensure the Open 2 would be a monumental leap forward rather than a minor refresh.
The OnePlus Open 2 Is Reportedly Scrapped
Unfortunately, a new report suggests that the wait might never end. According to a leak from tipster Yogesh Brar, the OnePlus Open 2 has now been fully and properly canceled. This report indicates that OnePlus likely will not release a book-style foldable anytime soon because Oppo is taking the lead with future Find N models. The leak also claims that the compact OnePlus 15s has been scrapped, which has a 90% chance of being canceled according to the source. This is a massive blow to anyone who was hoping the brand would return to the foldable mountain in 2026. For a long time, the working theory was that OnePlus simply skipped a generation by passing on the Oppo Find N5 to wait for more substantial hardware. We all assumed the upcoming Oppo Find N6 would finally be the device that OnePlus rebranded for the global market.
Oppo Goes Big While OnePlus Shrinks
This news is particularly frustrating when you look at what Oppo is planning for 2026. As I covered recently, Oppo is moving toward a dual-flagship foldable strategy. They are preparing the Find N6 as a thinness champion for early 2026 and a wider Find N7 later in the year to compete with Apple. The hardware on these devices sounds legendary. We are talking about 6,000mAh batteries, 200MP cameras and the Snapdragon 8 Elite processor.
Knowing that this hardware exists and is simply being withheld from the OnePlus brand is a tough pill to swallow. It signifies a shift where Oppo is the experimental flagship brand while OnePlus is being moved into a different lane. The report mentions that global users will likely be deprived of what could have been a high-quality foldable alternative to Samsung. The only good news is that Moto is primed to step into their place in the States.
If these reports are accurate, OnePlus is effectively exiting the foldable and compact flagship categories in the global market. This is a strange move for a brand that built its identity on being "Never Settle." By walking away from the most exciting form factor in mobile tech, they are settling for a lineup of standard slabs. The original OnePlus Open felt like the start of a new era for the company. It showed that they could still lead the industry with superior engineering and thoughtful software. If the Open 2 is truly dead, it feels like the end of that era. I hope OnePlus has a surprise up its sleeve, but for now, the future of OnePlus foldables looks incredibly bleak.
