Galaxy Z Fold 8 Might Be Crazy Thin & Light, While Missing One Big Feature

According to a new leak from Techmaniacs, Samsung is set to unveil two Galaxy Z Fold 8 models July 22nd. This latest report details the weight for both devices, along with what is likely the official thickness for the standard model, giving us a clearer look at how they will actually feel in hand.

These new numbers put some previous rumors into context, particularly the early CAD renders from Android Headlines that claimed the standard Fold 8 would launch thicker than its predecessor, measuring 4.5mm unfolded. As I suspected when analyzing those renders, that discrepancy comes down to how the measurements are taken. I predicted that the CAD data was likely accounting for the absolute outer frame and the slightly raised, protruding bezel around the edge, whereas Samsung's official spec sheets typically strip that away to focus purely on the chassis.

That prediction appears to be spot on as this new report has the Fold 8 at 4.1mm. In all probability, these new, sleeker measurements are Samsung's official marketing numbers, which measure the thinnest part of the glass and metal.

While this new leak doesn’t mention the Wide Fold 8’s thickness, if we look at the earlier CAD render which had the Fold 8 at 4.5mm and the Wide variant at 4.9, we can safely assume it’ll be marketed at around 4.4 or 4.5mm.

With that context, it's clear what Samsung's priorities are with the Fold 8. While we already knew the screen sizes, Samsung managed to shave the unfolded thickness down to a razor-thin 4.1mm. Even better, the weight drops to roughly 210g. Getting the weight down even further while increasing the battery from 4,400mAh to 5,000mAh is impressive, especially since Samsung is doing this with traditional battery chemistry rather than jumping over to silicon-carbon. The Z Fold 8 will feel even more like a standard slab flagship in your pocket without sacrificing longevity.

The leak also confirms the performance layout, with both the standard and Wide models running on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, ensuring computing power will not be a bottleneck. However, the camera hardware presents a much more distinct division between the two devices.

The standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 keeps the premium 200MP main camera sensor. The real upgrade for mobile photography on this model comes from the ultra-wide lens, which gets a substantial bump to a 50MP sensor, closing a long-standing hardware gap with Samsung's standard S-series flagships. Unfortunately, we are sticking with a 10MP 3x telephoto lens, which continues to lag far behind the telephoto offerings found on rival foldables.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide plays by a completely different set of rules. Because of its shorter, passport-style footprint, it actually edges out the standard model on the scale, coming in lighter at around 200g.

When it comes to the cameras on this model, the Wide drops the 200MP camera entirely, utilizing a 50MP main sensor instead. It matches the standard model with a 50MP ultra-wide lens, but it completely foregoes the telephoto camera, leaving you with a dual-camera setup and no dedicated optical zoom lens at all.

Perhaps Samsung cut the extra glass to accommodate the new form factor and save space inside the chassis, but it is highly likely that this choice is strategic. By dropping down to a dual-camera layout, Samsung can directly match what Apple is rumored to be offering with its upcoming book-style foldable, which is tipped to feature only a primary and ultra-wide camera.

The battery on the Wide is also slightly smaller at 4,800mAh. While the leak doesn't specify the Wide's exact thickness, these internal structural shifts tell the story. It is a reasonable engineering trade-off for a wider chassis, but it ensures these two devices will offer completely different ergonomic experiences.

Adding to these hardware revelations, fairly reputable tech tipster chunvn8888 has shared some additional insights into how these physical changes alter the device experience. According to his sources, the standard Fold 8 is essentially a more squared-off, thinner, and lighter iteration of its predecessor, but these ergonomic gains come with a distinct compromise in the hinge mechanism. To achieve the thinner profile, Samsung has reportedly implemented a weaker hinge that behaves similarly to many Chinese foldables. If you unfold the phone at an angle below 90 degrees, the hinge will actively bounce to a fully open position rather than holding a rigid intermediate angle. Additionally, despite earlier contradictory rumors, he confidently denies that the S Pen will be making a return.

If you want the thinnest possible device that mimics a traditional vertical phone layout with maximum camera utility, the standard Fold 8 hits the mark. If you prefer a shorter, lighter, passport-style device that is prioritizing pocketability and media consumption, and want a true landscape tablet experience, the Wide is the one to watch.
